Jimmy McIntosh left
Letham in Edgerston at the tender age of 14 to join the KOSB.
Telling a wee fib about his age, he was eventually found out
and pulled from the ranks to be placed in a bomb disposal
squad in London. Jimmy played down the heroics of his
exploits and those like him.
Jimmy, having
sampled London life stayed there after the war ended.
Hearing about the proposed celebrations near his home place,
he took a train north, hired a car in Newcastle and made his
way to Edgerston.
Jimmy spent several
days in the area and spoke to many locals about his memories
of Edgerston and the worthies in his younger years. At 84
years old, he is quite remarkable and his memory has not
faded, his mind still sharp. Jimmy imparted a lot of useful
information about the people and places of Edgerston during
his 14 years growing up in the area.
Jimmy was
particularly upset about the insurance premium added to his
hire car fee because of his age. Mind you, as I watched
Jimmy leave Camptown one night hitting about 6000 RPM in
first gear, I too had concerns about his driving ability.
Jimmy made it safely home to London leaving many friends
behind.
