panoramic image jed valley home front recall event - Dolphinston August 2005

Dolphinston was the location for this nostalgic event arranged under the nationwide umbrella of Home Front Recall.

This panoramic image sets the scene for the day which was followed by a very successful evening where over 200 people danced to the music of an eight-piece swing band.

Anderson shelter at Jed Valley Home Front Recall Event August 2005 Tiger Moth biplane at Jed Valley Home Front Recall Event. The pilot pushed the plane to the limit in a close quarters aerobatic display.

One of the many exhibits on display. Visitors could also view medals, ration books, old vehicles and memory corners in the marquee where locals shared their wartime recollections.

A tiger moth and a Pitts Special gave thrilling displays with the tiger moth bi-plane landing close by.

Jimmy McIntosh puckers up to this young Wren. Jimmy returned to the Scottish Borders for a visit after many years living in London

Jimmy McIntosh left Letham in Edgerston at the tender age of 14 to join the KOSB. Telling a wee fib about his age, he was eventually found out and pulled from the ranks to be placed in a bomb disposal squad in London. Jimmy played down the heroics of his exploits and those like him.

Jimmy, having sampled London life stayed there after the war ended. Hearing about the proposed celebrations near his home place, he took a train north, hired a car in Newcastle and made his way to Edgerston.

Jimmy spent several days in the area and spoke to many locals about his memories of Edgerston and the worthies in his younger years. At 84 years old, he is quite remarkable and his memory has not faded, his mind still sharp. Jimmy imparted a lot of useful information about the people and places of Edgerston during his 14 years growing up in the area.

Jimmy was particularly upset about the insurance premium added to his hire car fee because of his age. Mind you, as I watched Jimmy leave Camptown one night hitting about 6000 RPM in first gear, I too had concerns about his driving ability. Jimmy made it safely home to London leaving many friends behind.

Young and old played their part, dressing up for the day. Edgerston, Jed Valley Home Fron Recall Event and one of many photos taken on this wonderful day.
Young and old played their part on the day with this wee lass particularly well kitted out - as was her mum opposite! True Grit!
Pilot David Cyster spins the prop on this old Tiger Moth bi-plane. The designer of the Tiger Moth, Sir Geoffrey de Havilland, was a keen entomologist - so it is not surprising that he named some of his aircraft designs after ‘Moths’. Toe Jeffrey from Jedburgh reads up on some of Jedburghs wartime heroes.

This old Tiger Moth landed and took off twice and the pilot David Cyster pushed the old bird to the limit in a close quarters display of air acrobatics.

Jedburgh and the surrounding areas have their share of war heroes and history was proudly displayed for locals to read.
