You
can see from the above book title, the old photographs of Jedburgh
were originally presented in a book of views published by A & W
Easton of Jedburgh. This book was kindly loaned to me by Dave Lees.
I photographed the book that very night and returned
the precious record to him the next day.
I've
reproduced several of these photographs digitally and in some cases
enhanced them and added a simple graduated sky and a border to
finish them off. I have yet to verify who took the photographs but
if it was the famous local photographer Walter Easton, affectionately
known by locals as Watty Flashbulb, then I'm sure Watty wouldn't
object to having his work put forward in the 21st Century.
Watty
and I share something in common which is quite fitting under the
circumstances. As far as I'm aware, Watty and I are the only two
people from Jedburgh to have gained the Associateship Distinction with
the Royal Photographic Society. Watty was a character indeed, always
very professional and efficient. My earliest recollection of Watty was in my first year at infant school when the Callant
visited. Watty took the group photograph for the local paper. With
his hat and oversize raincoat flapping around him, he regimented
scores of people in the playground. To this day I can still picture
the scene quite clearly in my mind.
If
anyone knows of his family's whereabouts I'd appreciate contact
details. Watty was a talented photographer and I'd love to hunt down
some of his pictorial work which he produced equally as proficiently
as his
reportage work.
If
you have any old photos of Jedburgh that you would like included on
this website, please contact me.
I
hope you enjoy these views of Jedburgh courtesy of A & W Easton.
Regards,
John
